Surname projects gather DNA information thatĀ helps to establish connections between people who have the same surname and to join up the branches on their family trees in their search for common ancestors. Sometimes these projects need more information to confirm their hypotheses about these connections and so they offer free or subsidised Y-DNA testing to people with that particular surname.
